Current Members:

Pavithra Ramasubramanian is the new dictator of the team. She has the sexiest wheels on the team (perhaps with the exception of Chetan). She loves her dogs, and has recently gotten interested in photography.

Omkar Purohit is uncomfortable around lots of brown people. He is a Lakers fan and enjoys playing basketball and arranging songs. These days he is polishing his beat boxing skills.

Preeyanka Dixit was the benevolent dictator of Sur-Taal for 2007-08. She is known to have unpredictable reactions in the presence of cute babies and puppies– you have been warned! She loves musicals and singing Disney songs.

Nikhil Karmarkar is Sur-Taal’s music director and arranger. He likes Thai food, long walks on the beach, and puppies.

Sindhuja Bhaktavatsalam has been trained in Carnatic vocal music from a young age. She is pursuing her PHD in UCSD.

Anshuman Gupta ends up making people laugh a lot, since he is often funny without realizing it. He contributes his sonant skills to solos and base. He has vowed to buy a bike very soon now.

Hira Alam likes chocolate, and giving the “elders” on the team a hard time about their age.

Chetan Sharma is a clinical pharmacy student. He enjoys dancing, singing, and typical things that Bollywood heroes do.

Sheila Bhat loves to act like Bollywood heroines and dance in scenic places like the La Jolla Gliderport.

Kiran Vajapey loves to bust out into bollywood dance moves while singing random parts of our arrangements. He has been said to be the cute and adorable kid of our team.

Shruti Patel is the bubbly girl on our team. She cracks up into a laugh easily and is very lovable.

Devapratim “Preetam” Sarma is a conundrum. He’s scared of brown people and yet the former President of SangamSD. He’s shy and yet very bombastic. He’s friendly and considerate but can be very grating and annoying. He’s always down to jam with his violin and is thankful that he’s found a place in Surtaal to just hangout and enjoy Music. And yes, he can be very emotional, but his 1000+ friends on Facebook help stabilize him. Is Preetam Popular? No. But he likes to think so.

Jaya Prasad likes looking pretty and joining tons of Facebook groups.

Pranav Dixit is the cool guy. He loves singing and is classically trained.

Selene Jamall is the jazz singer of the team. With her amazing voice, she is able to bring the extra umph to the team. She loves to draw and more than that loves to sing.

Alumni:

Vidya Venkateswaran is one of the Co-founders of Sur Taal with Aditi. She loves Sur Taal dearly and is the queen of the bumble bees.

Diwaker Gupta is one of the few graduate students on the team, on his way to getting a PhD in Computer Science. He out-ages some of the younger member in the team by so much that legends and myths about him have now started making the rounds. On the team he can be found beat boxing, singing and doing base and baritone.

Aditi Iqbal Srivastava is the other Founder of Sur Taal.

Saurabh Panjwani is better known as Panju. A talented musician, Panju often gives the impression of being a robot because of his taste for high endurance activities (cycling and running).

Gayatri Boddupalli goes by many aliases, primarily, G3. She enjoys eating obnoxiously large amounts of food, usually all at once. Diwaker Gupta is her Restaurant Guru. Although she currently lives across the country, she is honored that Sur Taal invites her to be a guest singer. Whether Sur Taal benefits from this is a matter of controversy. Her favorite things to sing about include bumble bees and hai ramas, and sometimes, little known facts.

Achintya Madduri is the master of procrastination and rationalization. He is known for his acerbic sense of humour, and words of wisdom that can only come with age. Besides singing, Achintya like to play the flute and surfing.

A natural Libra, Huy Nguyễn is a creative idealist in the fields of art and romance. His hobbies include poetry, painting, graphic design, filmmaking, and of course, singing. Huy’s appreciation for South Asian arts brought him to Sur-Taal, where he enjoys learning the many meaningful lyrics. Despite claims from the Indian community, he is really not from India and tries to fly below the drama radar. He does, however, really like samosas.

Amrita Mehta loves to dance, sing and have a good time. She can always be counted on to keep the team “real” and “rooted”.
